Nevada, LV Considers Opening Up BLM Land

In many comments to this blog, readers have questioned the scarcity of land in areas like Las Vegas. It seems the idea is being discussed in policy circles already. City Life, "Reid advocates using the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act, as well as working with the Bureau of Land Management, to create a government housing trust in which land would be earmarked for affordable housing projects, an idea Gov. Kenny Guinn mentioned in his State of the State speech."

The home boom has put residents under economic pressure. "Between 2000 and 2003 the median income in Clark County increased about 2 percent while the price of a new home in 2004 alone increased 38 percent."

"'Despite our best efforts, in some ways our growth has really been a detriment to our community,' Commissioner Bruce Woodbury remarked."
